This Principal Battery Modeling Scientist role is in the Battery & Electrochemical Systems group in the Research & Technology organization of Medtronic Energy & Component Center (MECC). The Battery & Electrochemical Systems group at Medtronic has a long, storied history of making significant contributions to the world of lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, especially pertaining to medical devices. The engineer will architect, analyze and model battery and electrochemical system solutions with state-of-the-art materials and designs for applications in medical devices. Responsibilities will include interactions with internal business and operating unit customers to understand system level needs, decompose to component requirements, interfacing with technology roadmaps and creating systems level trade off studies, developing data based, predictive models for longevity, reliability and predictive maintenance of batteries and electrochemical systems.
A Day in the Life:
•Interface with internal business and operating unit customers to obtain system level requirements for medical devices and decompose into battery and component level requirements
•Develop data based, predictive design and performance models of batteries and electrochemical systems using data science, machine learning methods
•Apply model-based systems engineering approaches to mature battery and electrochemical systems models into medical device system level solutions, assess tradeoffs and alternatives
•Collaborate with product development teams on FMEAs, FTAs, hazard assessments, and assist in developing reliability and system longevity models
•Author reports and white papers as necessary to document models, trade off studies
•Present technical content and project updates in technical and design reviews, project and management updates
•Stay current with state of the art in battery technology, model-based systems engineering practices and AI/data science methodologies/algorithms
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Industrial Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of experience in an industrial setting or an MS/PhD with at least 5 years of experience.
Nice to Have:
•Masters’s or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
•Expertise in electrochemistry, lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, battery management systems, charging protocols, systems integration of batteries and electrochemical systems
•Proficient in battery and electrochemical system test methods, data acquisition and data handling methods, data science/AI based models for batteries and electrochemical systems
•Demonstrated experience with implementing model-based systems engineering approaches in integrating batteries in complex systems and devices and creating digital twins for predictive maintenance with remote monitoring
•Proficient with Python, and with packages like Scikit-learn and Keras, C/C++, MATLAB to process, visualize, analyze and model data, software change control in Git ecosystems
•Statistical analysis using JMP or Minitab, optimization methods, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt certification
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Project management experience or similar leadership experience
