The Restorative Therapies Group develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.
This position applies extensive scientific and technical expertise towards software, hardware and systems solutions to complex technical problems, and provides knowledge and solutions that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Work is performed without appreciable direction and with considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
The Principal Scientist is responsible for providing leadership in the development of cutting-edge knowledge and products used in the medical field. Specific tasks include:
Providing expertise in building and understanding basic scientific knowledge of key components of our products and how they interact with their environments to achieve product-level objectives
Providing expertise in applying knowledge of underlying science to help explore, design, test and optimize software, hardware and system solutions
Constructing, maintaining and applying modeling and simulation solutions to help support the exploration, design, testing and optimization software, hardware and system solutions
Providing expertise and leadership in planning and conducting feasibility studies for new ideas and technologies
Providing expertise when troubleshooting, maintaining and supporting existing products
Providing people leadership and mentorship within the organization which may include serving as a direct manager of technical employees.
Ensuring adherence to Medtronic and other quality standards including design procedures and compliance requirements.
Interfacing with project team members including engineering (mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and test), quality, regulatory, marketing, technical communications, end users, technical support, production, and suppliers.
Applying scientific and technical expertise and leadership to products outside of surgical navigation.
Supporting labs and surgical evaluations of products in addition to representing the company at industry trade shows and customer sites.
Recommending, leading, and participating in on-going individual and team professional development activities.
Leading the identification, implementation, and organizational change of significant or complex process improvements.
Willingness and ability to assume increased responsibility.
Leading the organization, estimation, scheduling, resourcing, and completion of project milestones.
Performing duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.
Performing all other duties as assigned.
Travel requirement: Occasional international and domestic travel may be required less than 25%.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
- 7+ years of development and/or research experience with BS / BA
- 5+ years of development and/or research experience with an Advanced degree
Nice to Have
- Experience in the medical device industry, specifically as related to Surgical Navigation, Imaging, and Robotics
- Expertise in electro-magnetics, optical tracking systems, and algorithm development
- Familiarity and experience working with Matlab, C++, Mathematica or other prototyping or scripting languages
- Familiarity with COMSOL, ANSYS or other modeling and simulation technologies
- Familiarity with surgical procedures, particularly those related to
- Knowledge and experience engaging with relevant external research organizations
- Experience with people management and mentoring of technical employees.
- Experience in modern, iterative software design processes and development practices including agile and test-driven development
- Ability to provide creativity while solving complex problems without known solutions.
- Ability to quickly prototype new concepts and ideas, and make conclusions and recommendations on the results
- Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art.
- Project management skills, including planning, estimation and project risk management.
- Advanced technical degree preferred
