The Cardiac Surgery Life Sciences Scientist II plans and executes activities, and analyzes results, for the development and improvement of medical devices, including point-of-care in vitro coagulation diagnostic devices. The scientist performs assigned research and development activities using defined scientific principles and practices, working with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. Works independently with general supervision on moderately complex projects and assignments.

 

A Day in the Life
•    Frequently uses and applies technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques to develop and improve medical devices. Special focus on point-of-care in vitro coagulation testing, polymer-based hemocompatible coatings and surface modifications.
•    Authors protocols, and test methods in support of product characterization, verification, and validation.
•    Performs a variety of duties including chemical reagent formulation, blood sample preparation, test device coating, functional product testing and troubleshooting issues. 
•    Conducts qualitative and quantitative assays from non-detailed instructions (e.g., ELISA, chromogenic and clotting based assays).
•    Identifies, defines and addresses problems that are not immediately evident and of moderate complexity.
•    Interprets results, writes clear, accurate reports using appropriate documentation methods.
•    Participates in root cause analysis and data mining.
•    Follows good lab practices and assumes partial to full responsibility in lab equipment qualification and maintenance.
•    Ensures lab compliance with all safety and quality standards. Follows all work/quality procedures to ensure safe testing and quality system compliance.
•    Conducts laboratory support functions such as stocking supplies and equipment, maintaining the chemical inventory list, and collecting, washing, and storing glassware.
•    Interacts with project team, other members of group or department, and peers from other departments.  Assists in project planning. May lead parts of projects.
•    Collaborates with external vendors, scientists, or clinicians on a limited basis in order to develop or improve products or processes.
•    Communicates effectively with project team, work group, peers, and supervisor.
•    Gives internal presentations of work. 
•    Begins to champion and sell novel ideas to workgroup and management.
•    Works with animal and human blood in an in vitro lab setting.
•    Assists with IRB blood donor program and performs venipuncture.

MUST HAVE 
(IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, THE FOLLOWING BASIC QUALIFICATIONS MUST BE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME)
Bachelor’s Degree with 2+ years of experience required or Advanced Degree with 0+ years of experience required. 

NICE TO HAVE
•    Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Chemistry or Biochemistry
•    2+ years experience in scientific field
•    1+ years experience working in industry
•    Knowledge of hemostasis and hematology measurement systems
•    Knowledge of Analytical Chemistry with application experiences in pharmaceutical and medical device industry
•    Demonstrated competency in wet chemistry lab skills such as reagent preparation, lab equipment (e.g., pipette, spectrophotometer) operation and maintenance
•    Ability to work with animal and human blood (Biohazard lab environment)
•    Prefer candidate with phlebotomy, or venipuncture, skills
•    Knowledge of polymer based hemocompatible coatings and surface modifications
•    Experience in laboratory instrument set up, data acquisition, calibration and maintenance
•    Experience with performing statistical analysis of data
•    Effective oral and written communicator with attention to detail

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
•    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile.  
•    The employee is also required to interact with a computer, and communicate with peers and co-workers.
•    Able to lift 25 pounds
•    Able to view items through microscope
•    Able to sit/stand for extended periods of time doing lab work
•    Extended periods of time doing computer-based work
•    No allergies to animals, animal-derived products and chemicals
