The Senior Veterinary Surgeon will provide expertise to assure humane care and treatment of the animal population used in the development of implantable devices, biomaterials, and/or biotherapeutic treatments at an AAALAC-accredited research facility. This will include recommendations and implementation of accepted standards pertaining to: animal husbandry, preventative medicine, experimental surgery, anesthesia, analgesia, diagnosis and treatment of health problems. The position reports to the Sr Medical Group Manager at Medtronic Physiological Research Laboratories (PRL).
A Day in the Life:
•Veterinary Medicine and Surgery: Provide direct veterinary care, conduct surgical procedures, and serve as consultant for animals housed at PRL and satellite boarding facilities.
Executing programs of veterinary care and research including: husbandry and medical care of diverse animal species, surgical procedures and/or biotherapeutic treatments, diagnostic medicine, imaging modalities, epidemiological investigations, animal acquisitions, environmental monitoring.
Provides leadership to professional and technical staff. Provides medical guidance to animal care professionals as dictated by study protocol or by animal welfare issues including: housing, quarantine, vaccination, analgesia, and treatment programs.
Sustain accreditation and regulatory compliance. Provide input into interpretation and implementation of regulations (GLP, USDA Animal Welfare Act, AAALAC), policies, and guidelines affecting animal care programs. Support aspects of regulatory inspections. Implement applicable SOPs. May serve on the IACUC, facilitating protocol review and facility inspections.
Provide rotating “on call” responsibilities that require 24-hour availability for animal care issues.
•Imaging Capabilities: Provide knowledge and experience in the areas of image capture and analysis for CT, MRI, ultrasound, and other imaging modalities.
•Animal Model Development: Consult on and review protocols for the acquisition and optimization of data. Research comparative anatomy and pathophysiology to determine the most appropriate animal model and test methods to achieve study objectives for device / biotherapeutic applications. Make surgical and medical care recommendations to investigators.
•Collaboration: Serve as spokesperson for Medtronic on care and use of laboratory animals and establishing global guidelines and regulations for industry. Facilitate collaborative research efforts and best practices.
•Education: Maintain substantive leading-edge knowledge of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery
•Participate in professional meetings, read current materials, and network with key opinion leaders.
Benchmark outside research facilities for seeking best practices and forging strategic working relationships
Provide educational and training programs for surgical and animal care technicians to maintain current best practices.
Required:
•Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, DVM / VMD
•Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine or DACLAM
•Current license (or ability to attain within 90 days) to practice veterinary medicine in MN
•Experience working in a research environment.
•Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Nice to Have:
•Diplomate American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM)
•Animal Care experience in a biomedical research industry, especially related to cardiac, neuro, and spine devices and therapies.
•Surgical experience or surgical interest in a biomedical research industry, especially related to cardiac, neuro, and spine devices and therapies.
•Experience and knowledge of imaging modalities including, but not limited to, CT, MRI, and Ultrasound.
•Preclinical research experience
•Clinical experience
