SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Sr. Principal Mechanical Design Engineer identifies and drives the implementation of product cost reduction and optimization opportunities in Surgical Robotics employing the practical application of mechanical design principles.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF:
1. Researches, plans, designs, verifies, validates and develops cost effective mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems, such as metals, instruments, controls, plastics, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, resonance, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
2. Recommends and implements various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
3. Relies on Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) and design for excellence (DFX) methodologies to identify and implement cost improvement opportunities.
4. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results.
5. May act as a mentor or may direct the work of other colleagues.
6. Procures and manage contractors.
7. Most of the time is spent delivering product and process cost reductions – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree required
Requires a University Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
Nice to Have
• B.S. Mechanical Engineering.
• 10 years of relevant experience at Sr. level or above.
• Experience in a medical device related industry with a demonstrated track record of developing capital products/processes for new products.
• Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for optimizing product costs.
• Knowledge and extensive experience on Project Management.
• Strong Mechanical Aptitude (aptitude for understanding and using machines and/or tools).
• Six Sigma/Lean certified preferred.
• Well versed in Design for Excellence (DFX) Principles.
• Knowledgeable in risk management methodologies such as DFMEA and PFMEA.
• Experience with Solid Works, AutoCAD, MS Office, MS Project.
• Effective communication skills with superiors, peers and subordinates
Travel required 20-30% of the time. International travel may be required.
